Description
Northfields Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the mid to late 18th century, possibly incorporating an older core. The farmhouse is constructed of red handmade brick in English garden wall bond, featuring a stone plinth and some stone dressings. It has a pantiled roof with a tiled ridge, stone copings, and kneelers, along with brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with the house facing south and the barn facing west. The house has a hearth-passage plan, is two storeys high, and has two windows. The downhouse is also two storeys but lower, with one wide bay and a passage. There is a 19th-century six-panel passage door. The house features small panel three-light 20th-century casements, with those on the ground floor set under flat gauged brick arches, except for a three-light Yorkshire sash on the first floor of the downhouse. The main house projects slightly, with a blocked fire window on the inner left return. It has shaped kneelers and end chimneys. The right return and rear are rendered, with an L-shaped outhouse extension.
The barn runs north from the left return of the house and is two storeys with a basement, comprising four bays. It has two stable doors set in stone alternating-block surrounds and four small windows. There is a stone external stair leading to a boarded left door near the north end. Inside the house, there are opposed doors from the through-passage, with the door into the houseplace being a plank door in a chamfered opening. The old kitchen features quarter-round moulded beams and several plank cupboards with L-hinges. The stairs are located behind the passage, leading up from the houseplace, with a dairy situated behind the parlour. There is also a subsidiary staircase leading up from the kitchen. The stone extension to the barn is not of special interest.
