Description
The Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building located in Old Byland. It dates from the late 11th century to early 12th century, featuring a nave and porch tower, with a chancel added in the 15th century and restoration in the 19th century. The church is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed quoins and has a Welsh slate roof.
The structure includes a 2-bay nave with a porch tower to the south and a single-bay chancel. The west end and nave have 19th-century 2-light trefoil-headed windows. The porch tower features a round-headed doorway with two orders of roll and hollow moulding, flanked by relocated early Norman capitals that are carved with dragons. Above the doorway is a square-headed single-light window, which is flanked by barleysugar shafts. An Anglo-Danish sundial on the east wall of the tower bears the inscription: "Sumar-Ledan Huscarl me facit." To the right, there is a flat-headed window with two cinquefoil lights.
The chancel is off-centre and has a flat-headed window with two cinquefoil lights to the south and a flat-headed window with three trefoil lights to the east. Inside, the chancel arch consists of three orders with roll and hollow moulding, resting on capitals shaped like ram's heads. The church also features a Norman tub font and medieval floor tiles arranged in a circular pattern in the chancel. The 15th-century king-post roof includes braces to the rig tree and principal rafters.
