Description

Lowdales Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with dressed stone ashlar surrounds. The roof is tiled with pantiles, featuring a brick ridge and a brick gable stack, along with ashlar coped gables and kneelers. The cottage has quoins and is single-storied with an attic.

The south front has a three-light sliding sash window with glazing bars, positioned off-centre, with a two-light similar window to the left and a single-light window to the right. A recessed addition to the left features a two-light casement window. Two dormer windows are positioned above the gables, each with decorative barge boards. A single-story lean-to addition extends to the east. The north front has a plank door on the left side and a small fixed light window to the east. A further two-light sliding sash window with glazing bars is found on the west front.

Inside, the cottage features an inglenook with a salt cupboard and match-boarded dado panelling. A central staircase and cupboards are fitted with monk and planton panelling. The west room also features match-boarded dado and a simple stone fireplace surround with a late 19th-century grate. Original 17th-century chamfered beams and window seats are present. The roof has a central upper cruck-truss and re-used rafters.
