Description

The Grammar School, now a meeting hall, was built in 1670 and later restored and extended in the 19th century. It was founded under a Trust Deed executed by Lady Elizabeth Lumley in 1657. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with a chamfered ashlar plinth, raised chamfered ashlar quoins, and ashlar dressings and stacks. It features a graduated stone flag roof and has a rectangular plan with extensions to the rear and rear left.

The structure is single storey with an attic and has a gable end facing the street. There is a single 3-light 19th-century round-headed Perpendicular window beneath a stopped hood-mould. Above this, in the gable end, is a raised attic band with a recessed bell-opening in a rounded arch of two orders, also beneath a stopped hood-mould.

On the right return front, there is a 19th-century recessed board door in a rebuilt opening, with a rebuilt 2-light cinque-foiled window in a square-headed opening above. There are also rebuilt 2-light mullion and transom square-headed windows on either side. At the rear, two original chamfered mullion and transom cinque-foiled windows flank the extension. The building features a cavetto-moulded eaves cornice, coped gables, and shaped kneelers, with a single stack located at the rear.
