Description
The White House and attached walls is a house located on Dikes Lane in Great Ayton. It dates from the mid-18th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and mid-19th century. The walls are painted roughcast and feature stone dressings, while the roofs are covered with pantiles and have coped gables with moulded kneelers. The house is two storeys high, with an original two-bay centre flanked by lower two-storey wings, which have two bays on the left and one bay on the right.
There is a half-glazed door in the right bay, sheltered by a mid-19th century canted extruded porch or hood that has bargeboards resting on a single chamfered wood post. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, and the lower windows have stone keystones, except for a French door on the right. An attached stone wall and fence to the south feature coped and ramped side walls, while the front wall has rounded-topped stone gatepiers with wooden fencing resting on a stone plinth. A short stone section was added to the south around 1980.
The south front has a tall projecting conservatory with curved bargeboards and a finial. There is also a stone garden wall, approximately two metres high, attached to the south, along with a stone lean-to privy. Inside, the house features a staircase with stick balusters, shutters, doors, and two small mid-18th century fireplaces located upstairs.
