Description
Airyholme Farmhouse and the attached outbuilding to the southeast is a farmhouse dating from the later 18th century, with the lower part being a restoration of an early 18th-century farmhouse. It is constructed from coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone, with coarser stone used in the outbuilding. The roof is made of Welsh slate with a tiled ridge, and features stone stacks, copings, and kneelers, while the outbuilding has a pantile roof. The farmhouse has a linear plan, with the main southwest front divided into two parts.
The taller left section is two stories high and has three bays, featuring a central boarded door with an overlight and an inner paterae frieze, along with 12-pane sash windows and end chimneys. The lower right section, which is the refronted earlier house, is also two stories and has two windows, with a half-glazed door on the right. This section includes three replaced sash windows with glazing bars and a large modern casement on the left, along with a ridge stack.
The lower outbuilding to the right is likely from the early 18th century, featuring a stable door on the left and a blank wall otherwise. It has moulded eaves, gable copings, and square kneelers. The rear of the main house displays a round-arched stair window and two 12-pane sash windows, although the ground floor windows have been altered and a porch has been added. Historically, Airyholme Farm was the boyhood home of Captain James Cook of the 'Endeavour'.
