HACKNESS HACKNESS TO SUFFIELD ROAD (south side, off) Outbuilding, with attached pump and wall, approximately 12 metres north of Low Hall

Sawmill, now outbuilding to Low Hall. c1800 with C20 alteration. For the Hackness Estate. Hammer-dressed sandstone with pantile roof. Rectangular barn with remains of former sawmill, mill race and wheelchamber to side. 2-storey, 4-bay front to barn, with single-storey, 3-bay wall of former mill to right. Barn has double board doors on sliding lintel to centre, with altered fixed light to left; end left and right board doors. To first floor, 12-pane fixed light to end left and right of centre, and board lifting doors to left of centre and end right, interspersed with paired ventilation slits. Hipped roof. Sawmill wall contains 3 segment-arched openings of voussoirs. The opening for the wheel axle survives in the right end wall. Against the barn left wall stands a trough and pump bearing a lead plaque with the winged spur crest of the Johnstone family and the date 1799.
