Description

This building is an outbuilding, with an attached pump and wall, located approximately 12 metres north of Low Hall in Hackness. It dates from around 1800 and was originally a sawmill, now serving as an outbuilding for Low Hall, with a 20th-century alteration. Constructed from hammer-dressed sandstone, it features a pantile roof.

The structure is a rectangular barn that retains elements of its former sawmill function, including a mill race and wheel chamber on one side. It has a two-storey, four-bay front, with a single-storey, three-bay wall of the former mill to the right. The barn has double board doors at the centre on a sliding lintel, with an altered fixed light to the left and board doors at both ends. On the first floor, there are 12-pane fixed lights at both ends and board lifting doors to the left of centre and at the right end, along with paired ventilation slits. The roof is hipped.

The sawmill wall features three segment-arched openings made of voussoirs, and the opening for the wheel axle is preserved in the right end wall. Attached to the left wall of the barn is a trough and pump, which bears a lead plaque with the winged spur crest of the Johnstone family and the date 1799.
