Description
River View and the attached cottage and forge are two cottages and a smithy built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The structure is made of roughly dressed sandstone and features a pantile roof with rebuilt brick stacks. It has a single storey and attic, with a five-window front and central entrances for both cottages, while the smithy is located to the right.
Each cottage has a door made of six raised and fielded panels. River View, on the left, has two-light, 12-pane, horizontal sliding sash windows on the ground floor, adorned with tooled lintels. The central cottage features four-pane sash windows with wedge lintels. The smithy has double plank doors to the right of paired six-pane windows, all under a continuous timber lintel.
The attic includes gabled dormers with scalloped bargeboards, four-pane pointed sash windows, and stone sills. The gables are coped and supported by shaped kneelers, with stacks located at the left end, left of center, and center right. Inside the smithy, there are two brick forges, one equipped with bellows, and two anvils. The smithy was operational until around 1950.
