Description
Duncombe Park is a great house located in Helmsley, built in the early 18th century with additions and alterations made in 1845 and the 1880s. It was probably designed by William Wakefield based on plans by Vanbrugh. The building has two storeys, a basement, and an attic, featuring 11 bays arranged in a 2:2:3:2:2 pattern.
The garden front has a central three-bay section with steps leading up to a tetrastyle Tuscan portico that includes a triglyph frieze and a carved pediment. The outer bays project forward and are marked by angle Doric pilasters that also carry triglyph friezes. The central bays contain round-headed sash windows set beneath keyed arches, while the outer bays feature sash windows with keyed architraves and pediments above. On the first floor, there are six-pane sash windows under the portico, and all other windows are sash with glazing bars. A continuous band runs at sill level, and the building has a plain parapet with urns at the corners. There is a projecting attic behind the pediment, also adorned with urns at the angles.
Inside, the entrance hall retains its original decorative scheme from around 1713, and there is an original wrought-iron staircase located in the north wing. The saloon showcases 18th-century decorative style, likely designed by William Young in 1895.
