Description
The Duncombe Park Gates and Railings, located at the Duncombe Park Estate in Rievaulx, were constructed in 1845 by architect Barry. They are made of sandstone ashlar and wrought iron. The design features plain railings that are supported by rusticated Tuscan columns topped with ball finials. The gate posts consist of plain drum columns that hold up plain entablatures, which display a horse on the left and a lion on the right, both bearing coats of arms. These are flanked by four rusticated Tuscan columns, also topped with ball finials. The gates and railings are noted for their architectural significance, as highlighted in Hussey's "Duncombe Park I and II" published in Country Life in December 1957, and in Pevsner's "Yorkshire: the North Riding."
