Description
Stump Cross is a cross base and stump of a shaft, likely dating from the medieval period and has been reordered. It is made of gritstone. The square plinth supports a battered square socket stone. A fragment of the shaft within the socket is too narrow for the hole and appears to be the upper part of the cross. There are also two prone pieces of shaft, which are flanking and partly under the base, and may represent the lower parts of a tall cross. There are no visible inscriptions. An OSBM (Ordnance Survey Bench Mark) is located on the east face. This cross marks the junction between the old road that runs west from Whitby and another road that goes north to Roxby.
