Description
The Coates Monument, located in the north-west corner of the churchyard of St. John the Evangelist, is a Grade II listed monument dating from around 1778, with additional inscriptions added around 1789 and in the early 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone and has a square plan. The monument features a concave obelisk topped with a carved lamp and flame. The base is moulded and decorated with acanthus leaves, supporting a tall die that displays memorial panels framed by low-relief rinceaux. The south panel honors Ann Coates, who died in 1778; the west panel commemorates William Coates, who died in 1789, and John Campion Coates, who died in 1811; the east panel remembers Ann Campion Coates, who died in 1809, and Elizabeth Campion Coates, who died in 1819.
