Description
Eskdale Gate Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 18th century, likely incorporating parts of a 17th-century house, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th century and modernisation in the 20th century. The front is finished with herringbone-tooled sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of dressed sandstone, with a hammered sandstone extension. The roof is covered with Roman tiles.
The building is two stories high and features a seven-window front. There is a modern door located to the right of centre, set in a quoined, two-centred-arched opening, with the date 1697 incised in the lintel above. Flanking the door are tall narrow lights with small-pane glazing. The remaining ground floor windows to the left of the door are 24-pane fixed lights, while those on the right are 16-pane sashes. The window above the door is blocked. To the left, there are two-light, 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes, a narrow 6-pane sash, and a tripartite window with a centre sash. The windows on the right are also tripartite with centre sashes. All windows have keyed, rusticated surrounds, with dropped keyblocks on the ground floor. The gables are coped, and there are shaped kneelers. There are stacks at both ends and one in the centre left.
At the rear, there are two blocked 17th-century quoined window surrounds with shaped lintels. The return wall of the outshut extension features a 20th-century door beneath a divided overlight, with a 16-pane sash window above it. Both openings have bordered hammered lintels, and the window has a tooled sill. On the right return, there are two quoined window surrounds, one containing a small sash with a chamfered lintel, and the other is blocked, located in the attic.
