Description
Spaunton Lodge is a shooting box built in 1770, as indicated by a reset datestone, and was extended around 1850 for the Darley family. The front features herringbone-tooled sandstone, while the rear is made of roughly tooled and hammer-dressed sandstone. The building has a pantile roof with rebuilt brick stacks and a double-depth, central-stairhall plan.
The two-storey structure has a five-bay front, with a single-storey gabled porch added to the center. The porch is accessed by stone steps and encloses a door with six recessed panels beneath a blind fanlight, all set in a round-arched surround with an impost band. There are unequal six-pane sash windows to the left and right of the porch. To either side of the porch, there are three canted bays with half-hexagonal roofs. The remaining windows are 16-pane sashes, with the one on the ground floor right being a later addition. All windows have painted stone sills and plain surrounds.
The roof features coped gables and rudimentary kneelers, with end stacks on the left and center left and right of the front range of the M-shaped roof. At the rear, there is a board door to the right beneath a divided overlight, with the datestone incorporated into the lintel. An oval panel in the center is inscribed with "M B D E S Q 1770" and has foliate decoration in low relief on either side. The left side has paired gable ends, which are two-storeys high with a basement. To the right, there is an elliptical carriage arch made of shaped voussoirs, which is now blocked.
