Description

Blacksmith's Cottage is a house and forge dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a pantiled roof with stone ridge, copings, kneelers, and stacks. The house has three storeys and two bays, while the forge to the left is a single storey with two bays. There is a 20th-century boarded door on the right, a boarded central opening, and a left stable door that may have provided access from the house to the forge. The right-hand door has a bracketed hood and a small side light. The house features sash windows, with 16 panes on the first floor and 12 panes above, all having projecting cills and external boarded shutters. The forge includes a boarded cart door under a concrete lintel on the right, a small Yorkshire sash window high up on the left, and two boarded loft openings under the eaves. The main roof has gable copings on prominent kneelers and cornice-banded end chimneys. A small lean-to at the left of the forge is not of special interest.
