Description
The railway bridge across the Murk Esk in Grosmont, built around 1845, is likely the work of John Cass Birkenshaw, who was the Engineer for the York and North Midland Railway Company. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the bridge features a semicircular arch made of radiating voussoirs and a moulded corniced keystone, flanked by pairs of square-section buttress piers. There is a plain band topped with a cornice, which is corbelled over the piers, and a plain parapet with chamfered coping. The piers extend above the parapet and are capped with shallow pyramidal tops.
