Description

The North and South Lodges with attached walls and gatepiers were built between 1912 and 1914 by architect Darcy Braddell for the First Lord Melchet. These lodges are constructed of Flemish bond brick using small-sized bricks and feature pyramidal tiled roofs with a central brick chimney. They are square in shape, single storey with an attic, and each lodge has two windows.

The North Lodge has a central planked door with large decorative L-hinges and an elliptical-arched stone doorcase. To the right of the door is a circular window, and to the left is a cross window. There is a moulded stone cornice at the eaves, and the attic includes two segmental-headed dormers with 2-light casements. The left side of the lodge features a canted bay with two small lights, and there is a centrally-placed stone dormer in the attic with a segmental pediment and scrolled decorative cast-iron rainwater heads. The right side has a 3-light mullioned and transomed window and one segmental-headed dormer. The rear has a 2-light mullioned and transomed window and two segmental-headed dormers. All casements have leaded panes.

The South Lodge is a mirror image of the North Lodge, with the entrances facing across the drive. The large brick gate piers have moulded stone capping and large ball finials, while the attached walls feature plain stone coping. This pair of lodges presents a well-balanced composition with good details that remain unaltered. Darcy Braddell was known for his work at Melchet Park in Sherfield English parish, Hampshire.
