Description

The Church of St Saviours is a parish church located on Wilverley Road in Brockenhurst. It was constructed between 1895 and 1903 by architects W.H. Romaine-Walker and Besant but was left unfinished until it opened in 1905 as the parish church for Rhinefield. The church was completed in 1961. It features squared Purbeck stone, Bath stone, and an unfinished west end made of concrete bricks, with a stone flag roof and ashlar stonework inside.

The church has a chancel with a north-west organ chamber and a south chapel/vestry, along with a five-bay aisled nave that includes a south-west porch, all designed in the Decorated style. The chancel is highlighted by a five-light Reticulated window on the east side, with stepped angle buttresses topped by octagonal turrets on the gable wall. Each side wall features projecting walkways of galleries with lancets, supported by arches that form an arcade on the walls, although the south side is hidden by the vestry.

The nave has octagonal turrets on the east side, which are topped with octagonal turret finials beneath a low-pitched roof behind a parapet. It also includes two-light trefoiled windows with Reticulated heads. The large south-west porch has a roof that continues from the aisle and features a three-order pointed door, a canopied niche above, and diagonal corner buttresses. The west end of the church was simplified in 1960.

Inside, only the chancel was nearly completed, and even then, much of the ornamental carving was left undone. The interior boasts an impressive stone reredos and striking galleries on each side.
