Description
Low Mill Farmhouse and the adjoining barn/byres date back to 1611, as indicated by the inscription over the rear entrance, which reads E.G. M.G. 1611 T.G., linked to the Greenhow family. The building features painted roughcast walls beneath a 20th-century greenslate roof and has a brick chimney stack. It is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a single-bay byre to the left under a common roof. There is also a right-angled two-storey, single-bay extension to the rear and a right-angled two-bay barn at the back, creating an overall U-shape.
The farmhouse has a blocked entrance and ground floor windows with chamfered surrounds, although the original stone mullions have been removed. These windows are all topped with a continuous hoodmould. The upper-floor windows are larger and also feature chamfered surrounds. The former byre on the left has a 20th-century door and windows. The rear entrance boasts a Tudor-arched chamfered surround with an inscribed frieze beneath a hoodmould. The rear extension retains original small chamfered-surround windows. The barn includes chamfered-surround entrances and loft, along with a 20th-century window.
Inside, the rear door has a drawbar tunnel with a drawbar stilt. All interior doorways are framed with chamfered stone surrounds under Tudor arches. There is a stone-arched inglenook with a heck partition and beamed ceilings. This farmhouse is notable as an early example for the area and retains an unaltered interior.
