Description

Middle Farm Cottage is a house that was formerly part of Middle Farmhouse. It features a date and inscription over an interior doorway that reads T.M. M.M. 1670, indicating Thomas and Mary Mark, and an extension with a date and inscription over a window that reads B.S.M. (16) 95, for Benjamin and Sarah Mark. The cottage has undergone 20th-century alterations and is constructed from mixed cobble and slate rubble, with some areas whitewashed. It has a graduated greenslate roof with stone chimney stacks, the central stack dating from the 17th century, topped with slate cowling.

The building is two storeys high and consists of two bays, with a set-back three-bay extension at right angles to the common roof line. The oldest part features two chamfered stone-mullioned windows, one window with the mullion removed, and a single-light window. The end window has an architrave that encloses the date and inscription. The extension slightly projects, creating an angle with two half gables and a side plank door in an alternate-block surround. The facade includes 20th-century windows set in red sandstone surrounds, with chamfered-surround windows above, where the mullions have been removed. There is a small fire window to the right and a segmental archway to the left, which is now used as a garage. An article from the Evening Mail on 15 June 1976 illustrates the building and suggests it may have been the home of one of General Wade's surveyors during the Highland roadbuilding.
