Description
Millbeck Hall and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dated 1592, located in Underskiddaw. The building features roughcast walls and a graduated greenslate roof with brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with a contemporary single-bay wing to the left rear and a two-bay barn to the right, creating an overall L-shape. The façade includes 2- and 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows and smaller fire windows on both floors to the right. There are two windows that have been replaced with 20th-century casements in enlarged surrounds.
At the rear, there is a replacement studded plank door set in a Tudor-style surround under a shaped lintel, which is inscribed with the words "QVORSUM M.W. VIVERE MORI, MORI VIVERE NICHOLAS WILLIAMSON" (whither are we going, to live is to die, to die is to live eternally). The rear also features 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows, similar to those in the wing. A left plank door leads to a ramp and steps that access a loft doorway.
The barn has openings with plain reveals and doorways on the side and rear. It is believed to incorporate remains of a 15th-century fortified tower, which includes a newel staircase within the thickness of the wall, although this is concealed by roughcast. Millbeck Hall is noted as the birthplace of Sir Joseph Williamson, a 17th-century Secretary of State.
