Description

The house at Graythwaite Old Hall, also known as Low Graythwaite Hall, dates to the 16th or 17th century, with an east wing added around 1710. It is constructed of roughcast stone with a slate roof. The east facade is three stories high and six bays wide, featuring a top, bracketed cornice. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The first three bays on the first floor have sash windows with horns. The ground floor has blocked windows with inserted round windows to the first two bays. The fourth bay is distinguished by a Venetian window with sash and glazing bars. The entrance, centrally located in the third bay, is topped by an aedicule with flat pilasters and a cartouche displaying the arms of the Rawlinson family within a pediment, and it features a half-glazed door. Gable-end stacks are present, along with two cross-axial stacks. A raking buttress and French window are visible on the left return, along with a sash window to the ground and first floors. At the rear, a two-story, three-bay gabled wing extends, with sash windows with glazing bars to the south side. A lean-to porch is embellished with elaborate curly brackets. The north facade exhibits wooden-mullioned windows on the first floor, including a two-light window with leaded glazing, two chamfered-mullioned windows of three lights with a transom and leaded glazing, and a two-light window above the gable of a one-story service wing. A small gabled porch and a lean-to outshut are located at the rear of the east wing.

Inside, the hall features low fielded panelling and a court cupboard dated "WRM 1682." A large fireplace has an inserted stone surround and a cast iron fireback bearing a figure under an arch, cherubs, and the lettering "AR/TKM/1714." Stop-chamfered beams are also present. Other rooms contain fielded panelling; the room to the south has a coffered ceiling and an early 17th-century overmantel fireplace, while the room to the north is defined by full-height panelling and a dado rail. A cupboard door in the north room reveals a smaller spice cupboard door with incised decoration, alongside remains of original plaster with painted panelling. In the rear wing, plank and muntin partitions, stop-chamfered beams, moulded ceiling panels (partially in the kitchen), and a cupboard with a bread oven are found. A south-facing door has a draw bar. Two staircases, each with turned balusters and square newels, are present; one continues to the second floor as a spiral staircase. The first floor contains some panelling with moulded stiles and rails, as well as some panelled doors. One room on the first floor features full-height fielded panelling with pairs of fluted pilasters, a door with a fanlight, and a bolection moulded fireplace set at an angle. Some two-panel doors are found on the second floor.
