Description

Cunsey Mill is a water-driven sawmill built in 1890, although the coppice barn appears to be older. The structure is made of slate stone rubble, mostly unpointed, and features a slate roof. It consists of two gabled ranges with an open shed to the northeast, which has a gabled coppice barn at the rear. The left gable has three windows, while the right gable has one blocked window and a doorway, all with slate lintels. The windows have fixed glazing, and the blocked window has been altered to include a sliding door. Each gable also has a round window with a dressed surround. The open sheds, which are mostly wooden with corrugated iron roofs, are not particularly special but contribute to the overall character of the site, along with the sheerlegs crane. The open barn at the rear runs at right angles to the main building and features different, older stonework. It has two bays and round stone piers, with a water pipe entering the building on the southwest side, supported by rubble piers. The interior has not been inspected, but wood-making machinery is visible through the window, including a Robinsons bench saw in the open shed. A full set of machinery powered by a turbine and line shafting is said to remain. Originally, the mill was a bobbin mill before becoming a sawmill in 1890. The adjacent miller's house is contemporary to the mill but is not of special interest.
