Description
Dove Nest is a building dating from 1780, located on Windermere Road in Ambleside. The poet Mrs. Hemans stayed here for the summer of 1830. The building has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. It features a roughcast exterior with deeply overhanging eaves and is two storeys high. The front facing the lake has a former doorway, now a window, with a stone architrave and cornice. There are two 12-paned sash windows on the ground floor and three above, along with a small sash window at the top of the gable. A gabled wing to the north has one sash window on each floor, while a gabled wing to the south includes a pointed arched porch and one sash window on each floor. The three gables are adorned with pierced 19th-century bargeboards. Inside, there is an 18th-century marble fireplace that was originally from Elleray.
