Description

Wansfell Holme is a substantial house of 1836 constructed of stone rubble. It is located on the Ambleside to Windermere Road. The south front features a three-bay sun room on the ground floor, built with an elaborate iron and glass structure with five wide pointed arches. French windows within the sun room are fitted with Gothic traceried fanlights. Five windows above are set within moulded stone architraves. The house is flanked by gabled wings at each end, and features Gothic eaves and elaborate cusped bargeboards with finials fixed to carved corner brackets. Tall octagonal chimneys are a prominent feature. The entrance front presents five similar gables, including a gabled porch with a Tudor arched entrance. The porch has a stepped label, three-light windows on either side, and a ribbed vault with a carved boss. The inner door of the porch exhibits Gothic cusping. Inside the house is an early hydraulic lift.
