Description
Howbeck Farmhouse and Howbeck Cottage, along with adjoining barns, date back to 1710, as indicated by an internal lintel that reads "R.I.P. 1710" (Robert Priestman). The buildings feature painted incised stucco over mixed rubble and have a graduated greenslate roof with 19th-century yellow brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with Howbeck Cottage occupying the left two bays under a common roof. To the left of the farmhouse is a lower barn, and to the right is a lower right-angled barn.
Howbeck Farmhouse has a right top-glazed panelled door and sash windows set in painted stone surrounds. The upper floor features a three-light stone-mullioned window to the left, with a similar window below that has had its mullions removed. The barn to the right has rubble walls beneath a graduated greenslate roof, with a plank door and a loft door above it. External stone steps lead to another loft door to the right. Howbeck Cottage has a plank door and casement windows, along with one sash window that has glazing bars, all in painted stone surrounds. The barn to the left includes a large plank cart entrance, a panelled door to the left, and a small casement window above, all within stone surrounds.
The common rear wall of both houses features panelled doors, one of which is in a chamfered stone surround. There are sash windows and two staircase windows with intersecting glazing bars, set in round arches with false keystones, all in painted stone surrounds. Inside Howbeck Farmhouse, there is a heck partition and a firebeam. The entrance to the rear study has a stone architrave with a dated lintel.
