Description
Town End House and the attached barn date from 1667, as indicated by a stone inscription that reads 'W & AL/1667' (Langhorn), with later additions. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble, with the house being roughcast and both featuring slate roofs. The house is two storeys high and has an L-shaped barn attached to its north end.
The east elevation of the house consists of four bays, with the third and fourth bays being taller, likely added later. The ground floor has windows with chamfered reveals in the first two bays; the first bay features small-paned glazing, while the second bay has a three-light window with flat-faced mullions and small-paned glazing. The fourth bay contains a 20-panel sashed window and a small gabled wing with sashed windows that have glazing bars.
On the first floor, there are single-chamfered-mullioned windows that were probably originally four lights, with one remaining mullion and small-paned glazing. The second bay has a sashed window with glazing bars, while the third bay has a small-paned window with chamfered reveals and a blocked light to the south. The fourth bay mirrors the second bay. The entrance to the third bay features chamfered reveals and a sunk segmental head with an enriched dated lintel, leading to a glazed door. The house has three gable-end stacks.
The west elevation includes an outshut under a catslide roof in the first bay, and the third bay has a hipped stair wing with a window featuring small-paned fixed glazing. The entrance to the second bay has a similar design to the third bay's entrance but features a sunk triangular head and a plank door.
To the north, there is a projecting barn range with a loading door on the south gable end, which connects to a range running to the east. The south elevation has a segmental barn entrance with smaller segmental-headed entrances at either end. The lower two-bay section to the east has a wide entrance and an entrance and window in the second bay. The first floor features an entrance accessed by steps and a loading door. The interior of the house has not been inspected, but it is noted to have a first-floor fireplace with an architrave and an enriched lintel inscribed with '13 W & AL 72' and added initials 'IL/HH'.
