Description

Higham Hall, built in 1828 for T.A. Hoskins, is now a Residential Adult Education Centre. The building is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar and features string courses, battlemented parapets, and stepped angle buttresses. It has a graduated greenslate roof with ashlar chimney stacks. The hall is two storeys tall and has 11 bays designed in the Gothic style. The central three bays contain 19th-century double doors set in a pointed surround, which is framed by a contemporary battlemented stone porch that displays the shield of Hoskins' arms.

Flanking the central section are two-and-a-half storey towers with octagonal angle turrets, featuring pyramidal roofs at the front and battlemented parapets at the rear, each with blind cross vents. The windows are sash style, with those on the ground floor having pointed-head glazing bars beneath hoodmoulds, while the upper sash windows have intersecting glazing bars in pointed heads. At the rear, extensions enclose a courtyard, complemented by angle turrets and a mock battlemental curtain wall. The building also includes various 19th-century two-light stone-mullioned windows and some 20th-century windows.

Inside, the hall features Gothic panelled doors and ceilings adorned with heraldic shields. The staircase is notable for its Gothic balusters and carved tread ends, along with niches designed for statues.
