Description
Routenbeck Cruck Barn is a farm outbuilding that has been converted into a garage and store. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The barn is constructed from rubble lakeland stone, laid in courses, and is topped with a graduated Westmorland slate roof. It has a five-bay plan with offshoots on either side of the original double doorway, which now features a 20th-century garage door. The building is single-storey with a single bay loft at the north end. The offshoot to the north of the doorway was originally three bays and had standings for cattle; the north end wall remains in line with the main gable. Inside, there are four full cruck trusses, with tie beams extending into the side walls. The cruck blades are cross-lapped and rice-halved at the apex to support a diagonally-set ridge purlin. The roof features a lapped single purlin design with curved wind braces.
