Description
Green End Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with some alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of roughcast stone and features a slate roof. The building is L-shaped, has two storeys, and a three-bay front facade. The windows are sashed with glazing bars, and there is a central entrance that is sheltered by a gabled trellis porch. The cottage has gable-end stacks, and the left side has four bays, with the fourth bay being gabled. A slate dripcourse runs along the building, and the windows on this side have small-paned casements. There is a gable-end stack and another stack that runs parallel to the roof ridge. At the rear, there is a lean-to outhouse attached to the front wing, with a stair wing under a cat slide roof at the angle. This area features three-light wood-mullioned windows with leaded glazing on both sides, and the cat slide roof extends as a canopy to the return wing, which may have served as a gallery. Inside, the cottage includes chamfered beams, a plank and muntin partition, and a staircase with turned balusters and square newels. The poet William Wordsworth is believed to have lived here while attending Hawkshead Grammar School. The property is owned by the National Trust.
