Description
This is a farm building located 150 meters east of Stephenson Ground Farmhouse, originally built as a dwelling. It likely dates from the early 16th century to no later than the early 17th century. The structure is made of random rubble with some earth infill and features a diminishing stone slab gable-end roof with 'wrestler' ridge slates.
The building has a longhouse layout, with the house section on the left that includes an end fireplace, which was probably originally a firehood. Access to this part is through the left of two doorways that lead into a cross-passage, while the byre on the right has its own separate entrance. It is a single-storey building. The front has two closely set doorways with rubble jambs and rough slate lintels, featuring planked doors, one of which has an upright slate with bolt holes. There is also one window to the extreme left next to the fireplace. The rear has a single door opposite the front house door at the back of the cross passage, along with a small opening in the right-hand gable wall.
Internally, there is one disturbed cruck truss and another truss with tie and principal rafters, along with side purlins and a ridge piece. Historically, Stephenson Ground was granted as wasteland for cultivation by Furness Abbey to the Stephenson family in 1509, suggesting that a farmhouse was likely built soon after, with the current structure possibly representing this building or its successor. The existing farmhouse dates from the late 18th century.
