Description
Brimmer Head Farmhouse, dating from 1574 and 1870, is reputedly the oldest house in Grasmere. It is constructed of white-washed stone rubble with a slate roof and has two storeys. An extension was added in 1870, featuring a bay window. The front of the house has a central door, two windows on the ground floor, and three above, all with wooden mullions, along with two small gablets over the upper windows. To the right, there is an adjoining farm building under the same roof, which includes shippons below and a loft above. Traces of original external stairs can still be seen. Inside, the kitchen features very low ceiling beams and oak panelling. The stairs date from the mid-17th century and include treads and panelling, along with turned balusters marked with Roman numerals. There is a blocked old window visible inside, and an oak chest dated 1637. An old ladder remains in the original 16th-century kitchen.
