Description
The range of farm outbuildings at High House dates from the 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries, and further alterations and additions in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of roughly-coursed rubble Lakeland stone, with some sandstone dressings, and are topped with green slate roofs laid to diminishing courses, although some sections have been replaced with corrugated sheeting. The complex has an irregular 'T' shape and has been incrementally linked and extended.
The cruck-framed range to the northwest is the earliest part of the outbuildings, consisting of four bays with a lean-to extension that encloses the south side wall. Inside, there are three cruck trusses that support a diagonally set ridge. Originally, there were single purlins, but these have been replaced with 20th-century double purlins on the south slope. Each truss features dovetailed, face-halved, and lapped collars, along with yokes that connect the truss apexes. Additional bearers on the south side support the replacement purlins. The east gable has an inserted ground-floor opening and a taking-in door at the gable apex.
