Description

South Stock Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a yard boundary wall and piggery, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, though it has been much modified. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble with some slate hanging and features a slurried slate roof. It is designed in an L-plan, comprising a cross passage flanked by rooms that have front lateral stacks and a rear kitchen wing, with a transverse staircase at the back.

The farmhouse has two storeys. The entrance wing includes two large slate-hung external eaves stacks. Most windows have been replaced in the late 20th century, but they follow the pattern of earlier openings. On the entrance side, there is one window and a central plank door with strap hinges, set within a late 20th-century brick porch, along with three dove holes. The return wing, which faces the yard, has four windows arranged as two-light above two on the ground floor, with an area of slate hanging on the upper storey. This wing features a cropped gable stack or ventilator and appears to have been added to the original structure. The inner faces of the wings contain various casement windows and a plank door leading to the cross passage, while the north gable is plain.

Inside, only part of the ground floor was accessible. Most original details have been removed or altered; the cross passage is now in concrete, and the fireplaces include one from the mid-19th century with tiles. No beams are visible, but there are some plank or panelled doors.

As for subsidiary features, on the entrance side there is an opening to the yard, followed by a rubble wall approximately 1 meter high with a rounded top, which returns to a small gabled piggery running parallel to the return wing. The piggery has a door at each gable end and a full-height plank door in the center of the long side. The wall continues opposite the south wing and returns to it at the gable end.
