Description

The former Chapel at South Furzehill Farm, dedicated to St John the Baptist, is now an outbuilding. It dates from the late medieval period and has been significantly modified. The structure is built of rubble with a corrugated iron roof. It has a single-unit plan with an attached outshut, located approximately 20 meters north of the old farmhouse. The long roof slope facing the farmhouse features rough coped gable ends. Access is from the south via plank doors, leading up wide stone steps to the 'nave', which lacks recognizable details. Inside, there is an opening with wood lintels through a thick wall on the right, as well as evidence of blocked openings in the end gable wall and a small niche; this wall is not bonded to the two lateral walls. The north slope has some transparent corrugated sheeting. Notably, the pinnacles at North Furzehill and Ye Old Cottage in Barbrook are said to have originated from this chapel.
