Description
Zeals is a farmhouse that has been converted into a dwelling. It likely dates back to the late medieval period, was ceiled in the late 16th century, and underwent alterations and enlargements in the mid-19th century. The building is rendered over rubble, with a painted random rubble extension and a Roman tiled roof. The left gable end features bargeboarding, and there is a lateral stack to the right of the door that has a circular top and a slate-roofed bread oven. Additionally, there is a circular stack on the right gable end and a painted brick stack that rises from the eaves on the left side.
The layout suggests it was originally an open hall house, later ceiled to create a three-cell structure with a cross passage, along with later additions at the rear and gable ends. The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high and has a 1:2 bay arrangement. All the windows are 20th-century wooden casements, with one set located below the eaves on the right side. The ground floor has two windows on the left and one on the right, with an entrance beside the stack that features a stable-type door and a double Roman pentice tile porch abutting the stack. There are long catslide roof additions below the stack and on the right gable end, which have overhanging eaves and part of the facade is tile hung with a two-light window. There is also an extension at the rear.
The interior has not been seen but is reported to contain three pairs of jointed cruck trusses, some of which rise from floor level, timber-framed partitions, and a turret stair.
