Description

Lorna Doone Farmhouse is a building that originally served as a farmhouse and later became two cottages, now functioning as a house. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and underwent partial rebuilding or extension in the 18th century, with further remodeling likely occurring in the late 19th century. The building was partly reroofed in the late 20th century. It is constructed of rendered stone and features slate roofs, with the southern part being slightly higher and previously thatched.

The farmhouse has a three-room plan that faces east. The original 17th-century two-room plan is on the left side, consisting of a hall on the right with a slate-hung external lateral stack at the rear, and a left-hand room with a partly-rendered external stone end stack. An addition or rebuilding created the former third room on the right, which is now incorporated into the hall and has a stack to the right, with the third room having an external end stack. The building has later staircases and is two storeys high.

The exterior features five windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor, primarily consisting of 19th-century two and three-light wooden casements. There are two 20th-century half-glazed doors: one located between the first and second windows from the left, accompanied by a lean-to porch, and another to the right with a similar porch. At the rear, there is a one-storey lean-to addition.

Inside, the layout has been significantly altered. The central ground floor room showcases chamfered cross beams, with the central beam displaying scroll stops. The right-hand beam aligns with the former end wall of the original 17th-century house. There is a fireplace at the rear with an old wooden lintel and an inserted fireplace to the right. The roof is mainly from the 20th century. This farmhouse is one of two former farmhouses located close together by Badgworthy Water.
