Description

Yenworthy Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was enlarged and mainly rebuilt around 1850 by Mr. Halliday. It features random rubble construction and slate roofs, with overhanging eaves and decorative bargeboards. The building has an external stone stack on the left gable end and another at the centre of the ridge. It is arranged in an L-plan and has two storeys with a façade of two, one, and one bays. All windows are fitted with astragal cast iron glazing bars, with gabled tops on the three and two-light windows on the left. The east wing has a lancet window in the gable end on the right and a three-light window below it, along with a three-light window to the left of the porch and a two-light window to the right. There is a stepped buttress and a flat-roofed rectangular bay with a parapet on the right, as well as a single-storey gabled porch with diagonal stepped buttresses and a rusticated surround to a semi-circular headed opening, which features a diagonal panel inscribed with the name "Yenworthy."

On the left return, the northwest corner of the gable end has an arched opening that abuts a random rubble wall about 1.5 meters high, which returns to the wing at the rear and includes a lean-to shed. The interior has not been seen but is said to contain a reset beam dated 1628, which is thought to indicate the date of the farmhouse's original plan, along with scroll stops on chamfered beams in the front room of the west wing and a moulded step with run-out stops in the rear room. There are otherwise no dateable features. Yenworthy Farmhouse is part of the Glenthorne estate buildings, designed by Mr. Halliday with the assistance of Robinson's Rural Architecture, and is a good example of a mid-19th-century farmhouse designed by a gentleman architect.
