Description
This is a churchyard cross located about 3 metres south-east of the porch of the Church of St John in Cutcombe Village. It dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1898 as a memorial to John King Esq. The cross is made of sandstone, which has been renewed with Ham stone. It features a 19th-century three-stage calvary with a nosing and the remains of a square socket that has been shaped into an octagon. There is a stump of a shaft with a corbelled bracket intended for a statue, which continues with a 19th-century octagonal shaft topped by a cross with trefoil arms. This information is referenced in Pooley's "Old Crosses of Somerset" from 1877 and Kelly's Directory from 1906.
