Description
LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH
SS74NW LEE ABBEY 858-1/2/66 (South side) 03/09/73 Valley Lodge
II
Detached lodge. c1875 and late C20. Rubble, scallop-edge tile roof with decorative clay ridges. L-plan, with gabled wing brought forward, right, and with central entry; the lodge extended at the rear in late C20, with swept-down roof. In the Picturesque tradition, echoed in other properties on the Lee Abbey estate. 2 storeys; 1+1-window range. Wood hollow-mould mullion casements with cast-iron decorative glazing with extended hexagons, and set to large cut slate cills. To the left, in the set-back wing, a 3-light to large stone voussoirs, above a 3-light under a pent tile roof on poles. To the right is a 3-light above a bay with small single-light returns and 4-light front, under a pent roof. Centred is the original door, in 3 vertical panels with battens and nail-head, but entry is now by a C20 door in the extended wing to the right, set back. A large square stack to the left gable, and one centred to the ridge. The barge-boards, including the eaves to the pent bay are carved as interlaced twigs. INTERIOR was considerably altered when the extension was made, and little original detail was seen at ground floor level. The former list refers to a date of 1875 on a well-head, but this was not seen.
