Description
Valley Lodge is a detached lodge built around 1875, with some late 20th-century alterations. It features rubble construction and a scallop-edge tile roof with decorative clay ridges. The building is designed in an L-plan, with a gabled wing that is brought forward on the right side and a central entry. The lodge was extended at the rear in the late 20th century, which includes a swept-down roof. This design follows the Picturesque tradition, similar to other properties on the Lee Abbey estate.
The lodge has two storeys and a one-plus-one window range. It showcases wood hollow-mould mullion casements with cast-iron decorative glazing featuring extended hexagons, set on large cut slate cills. On the left side, in the set-back wing, there is a three-light window with large stone voussoirs, positioned above another three-light window under a pent tile roof supported by poles. On the right side, there is a three-light window above a bay that includes small single-light returns and a four-light front, all under a pent roof. The original door, which is centered, consists of three vertical panels with battens and nail-head detailing, but entry is now through a late 20th-century door located in the extended wing to the right, which is set back.
The lodge features a large square chimney stack on the left gable and another centered on the ridge. The barge-boards, including those on the eaves of the pent bay, are intricately carved to resemble interlaced twigs. The interior was significantly altered during the extension, and little original detail remains visible at the ground floor level. A former list mentions a date of 1875 on a well-head, but this was not observed.
