Description
Lower Lodge is a detached house, likely built around 1875, located in Lynton and Lynmouth. This picturesque building showcases an elaborate Cottage Ornee style, featuring a central entry and an asymmetrical front with twin gables. It stands two storeys high and has a two-window range. The windows are wood casements with mullions and decorative cast-iron lights.
On the upper floor, there are two four-light windows beneath carved flat lintels with peaked heads, set on slate sills. The ground floor includes a three-light window and a canted bay window with a 1:4:1-light configuration to the right, which is covered by a pent roof supported by stone piers. This bay also shelters a central pair of plank doors with fleur-de-lys hinges and a side-light, all under a straight moulded wood lintel. The gables feature rich triple-cusped barge-boards supported by elaborate carved corbels, with the right gable returning the detailing. The overall walling is plain, except for one small light at ground level and a plain mid string. The left gable jetties slightly on a series of stone corbels.
The roof is tiled with scalloped ends and has a decorative clay ridge. The plain left gable features a large chimney stack, with another centrally located ridge stack. The rear of the building is simple, with a small gabled section that may contain the staircase. The interior is not accessible. Lower Lodge is a richly detailed example of a cottage from the Lee Abbey estate, similar in style to Valley Lodge and Lee Cottage in Martinhoe Civil Parish.
