Description

The Wind and Weather Hut is a memorial built in 1878 by John Barton Arundel Acland of Holnicote, New Zealand, who was the youngest son of Thomas Dyke Acland (1787-1871). Constructed from ashlar, the hut has a rectangular plan and features a hipped stone roof. It is supported by chamfered piers that frame recesses with seats beneath inscriptions. These inscriptions include poems celebrating the beauty of the countryside by Heber and Keble, as well as a tribute to Thomas Dyke Acland, who played a significant role in the Picturesque movement through his improvements to the Selworthy estate, particularly the cottages around Selworthy Green.
