Description

The gatehouse, along with a range of cottages to the east and a ruined structure to the west, is located in Combe Sydenham, StoGumber. This building complex dates back to the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. At the time of the survey in January 1984, the gatehouse and the western range were undergoing reconstruction.

The gatehouse is constructed from red sandstone random rubble and stands three storeys tall with one bay. It does not have a parapet and is in the process of being reconstructed. The entrance front on the south side features a renewed square-headed opening under a wooden lintel, while the rear elevation has a chamfered four-centred arched opening. A stair turret in the northwest corner is lit by lancet windows and rises above the cornice.

The adjoining range of three cottages is roughcast over random rubble, with a chamfered southeast corner and a slate roof that is hipped to the right. There are brick stacks located between the third and fourth bays on the left above the entrance, and between the first and second bays on the right, likely part of the original gable end. These cottages are two storeys high with six bays, featuring a mix of 19th-century casements. The entrances are plank doors with pentice porches supported by shaped brackets, located in the second bay on the right, and between the third and fourth bays on the right and second and third bays on the left.

The ruined structure to the west of the gatehouse is also made of red sandstone random rubble and is roofless and gutted, standing two storeys tall with few remaining features from the 16th century.
