Description

The Old Post Office is a cottage, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is built with roughcast over random rubble, with a colourwashed left return, a rendered right return, and a thatched roof extended over a projecting two-storey bay on the left. An external brick stack is located on the right. The original plan incorporated a three-cell layout and a cross passage, which has been modified, with later additions at the rear. The front facade has three bays. The first floor features a two-light casement, a 17th-century four-light window with ovolo moulded mullions on the right, and a ground-floor segmental-headed, many-paned, two-light casement in the projecting bay on the left. The right-hand ground floor window has an early 19th-century shop front inserted, resting on a brick plinth, with a five-by-three pane design and saddleback glazing bars. A studded plank door, fitted with decorative hinges, is situated on the left. The building served as a post office and general store from the early to mid-19th century until the late 20th century.
