Description

Allerford Post Office and post box is a farmhouse that has been converted into a dwelling and post office, dating from the 16th to 17th century, with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone and blue lias random rubble, topped with a double Roman tiled roof that is half-hipped on the left side. It features a lateral stack with a rebuilt circular chimney at the left end bay, and a similar circular chimney has been added at the rear next to the left gable end.

The structure has a T-plan and is one and a half storeys tall, presenting a two-window facade. The windows are 19th-century casements, with two-light dormers that rise from just below the eaves to the right of the lateral stack. On the ground floor, there are large segmental-headed four-light ogee-headed casements with a rusticated lintel, and external wooden shutters. A George V post box is situated flanked by the lateral stack on both sides, beneath a triple Roman tiled pentice porch that has a cambered head opening. The porch features a laterally boarded and studded door, with a two-light casement to the right.

On the left gable end, there is a cambered head two-light casement, and on the ground floor, a triple Roman tile pentice hood covers three-light depressed ogee-headed casements.
