Description
The dovecot at Blackford Farm is a late medieval structure built from coursed random rubble, with some areas roughcast. It features a conical stone roof that rises from a moulded cornice and is open at the center. The dovecot is circular in plan and has a square-headed plank door with a renewed brick lintel. Inside, there are 11 tiers of irregularly spaced nesting boxes that rise to the eaves level, totaling an estimated 302 boxes. There is no evidence of a potence or other interior features. The manor house at Blackford was destroyed by fire in 1875, and the dovecot was acquired by the National Trust in 1944. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 207).
