Description
The stables and shippon, located approximately 2 meters east of Wonson Manor, have origins dating from the late 15th to early 16th century. They were refurbished and converted for agricultural use in the 17th century and modernized in the 19th century. The structure is built from granite stone rubble and features a slate roof, which was formerly thatch.
The stables and shippon face south, with the shippon, which includes a hayloft above, situated to the right of the stables, which also has a hayloft. The shippon is generally larger and taller than the stables. The stables are likely a 19th-century addition and feature a front doorway, a window, and a hayloft loading hatch to the right, all of which contain 20th-century joinery. The shippon has a late 15th to early 16th-century granite ashlar doorway at its left end, characterized by a two-centred arch with a chamfered surround. To the right of this doorway is a small slit window, followed by a hayloft loading hatch, and at the far right end are two large sloping buttresses. The roof is gable-ended and rises from right to left near the center. The right gable end of the shippon has a blocked doorway framed by monolithic granite pieces, with a small slit window and a drain hole located to the right of it. The rear wall is obscured by 20th-century sheds.
The interior was not accessible for inspection during the survey, but previous listings mention the presence of "ancient timberwork." The late 15th to early 16th-century doorway suggests that this building was not originally used for agricultural purposes. It may have been part of the original Wonson Manor or possibly a detached chapel. A more detailed survey of the building is recommended.
