Description

House and cottage, now divided into three dwellings. Built in 1840 for Richard D Cay. The building is constructed of coursed granite blocks, mostly rendered. It has a gabled tarred slate roof with stone coping to the left, a brick ridge, and brick end stacks. Providence Place is in an L-shape, with a rear left wing (now two dwellings) and Providence Cottage to the right, which is of a two-room plan with a central stair hall and an outshut to the right; a continuous outshut extends to the rear. The main front of Providence Place has four windows, with stone cills for the revealed eight-pane sash windows, and a panelled door with panelled reveals to the right of centre. Providence Cottage, on the right, has two windows. A mid-20th century lean-to porch fronts a half-glazed door. The ground floor of Providence Cottage has mid-20th century three-light casements, while the first floor features a mid-19th century two-light casement with HL hinges. The rear left wing, with three windows to the right side, has mostly late 19th and early 20th century three-light casements, except for a mid-19th century three-light casement with a leaded light on the first floor. A plaque reads "PROVIDENCE PLACE/BUILT BY/RICHARD D CAY/1840". The interior retains original features, though it was not inspected. Built by Richard Cay, a major benefactor to the Providence Place Methodist Chapel of 1839, the building served as his family home and as a worker's cottage (Providence Cottage).
