Description
South Forder Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th or 17th century and has been thoroughly modernised, with a new crosswing built around 1970. The building is constructed from plastered granite stone rubble, featuring granite stacks with granite chimney shafts, and has a thatched roof. The extension is also plastered and made from regular snecked blocks of unknown material, with a thatched roof as well.
Originally, the farmhouse had a 3-room-and-through-passage plan and faced southeast, built down a hillslope. The inner room at the uphill left end has an end stack, while the hall features an axial stack that backs onto the passage. There is a newel stair turret that projects from the front towards the lower end of the hall. Although the interior was not inspected during the survey, it is likely that the house began as a late medieval open hall house.
The 1970 crosswing, which has a 3-room plan, extends across the lower right end of the original structure, projecting both forwards and backwards. The farmhouse is now two storeys tall, although the former inner room appears to be a single storey. The exterior showcases an irregular three-window front with 20th-century casements of various sizes, most of which have glazing bars. The rear fenestration is similar, and both passage doors have been replaced with 20th-century versions. The main block has a gable-ended roof, while the crosswing has a half-hipped roof at each end. Despite the thorough modernisation in 1970, the irregularity of the fenestration suggests that much of the early fabric may still be retained.
