Description
Holne Bridge is a road bridge over the River Dart, dating from around 1413. It was widened on the upstream (west) side in the 19th century. The bridge is constructed of granite rubble and features three dressed granite round arches with recessed arch rings, along with an additional flood arch at the south end. The center arch is larger than the others. There are imposts at the springing of the arches and two cutwaters on both the upstream and downstream sides, which include refuges in the parapet above. The flood arch pier has 20th-century cutwaters. The parapets are topped with chamfered and round-section granite coping. This bridge was built following the destruction of an earlier bridge in a flood in 1413, and on August 19, 1413, Bishop Stafford offered indulgences to those who helped fund its rebuilding. It was repaired by the adjoining hundreds in 1558.
